Kavita Bansal is a Sales and Quotes Apprentice at global freight and logistics firm Independent Freight Solutions.
The 20-year-old, who left college in 2023 after studying forensic science, was on the lookout for an apprenticeship to help her launch a career in sales when the opportunity at the Nuneaton-based business was advertised.
Now in the middle of a two-year course, she has reflected on the unique challenges she has faced and the experience she has picked up working at a growing organisation in an ever-changing industry.
“It’s been such a great experience working in a new industry as it means you are developing all the time, especially alongside such supportive colleagues,” she said.
“After college, I feel like this has been the perfect next step as it’s forced me out of my comfort zone at times while I’ve been able to pick up new skills which are valuable in any line of work – all within a really positive, exciting work environment.
“I feel like I learn something new every week, both on the freight side of things and in sales. My colleagues have so much knowledge in both areas, and to be able to learn from experienced people has been incredibly valuable.
“I work closely with my line manager Anna and support a variety of tasks on the sales side – which requires effective communication both with clients and with colleagues.
“Every new client or scenario poses a slightly different challenge. In sales it’s important we are able to apply what we know about the industry and how it works in order to price competitively and ensure there is an effective handover to the team, which eventually looks after the shipment or project.
“You have to be switched on and willing to ask questions, while applying what you have learnt so far, and from that perspective I have really enjoyed it.
“I never envisioned working in logistics, but IFS has shown me there are incredible, interesting businesses all over the place, and I think more people would benefit from taking an apprenticeship with a local business – especially where there are experts to learn from.
“Every day is different. I feel like I am learning all the time and I can’t wait to see what else lies ahead in the rest of my apprenticeship.”
