HMRC is streamlining its customs and excise procedures into a single digital platform by grouping together some processes and reducing the amount of information required for authorisations.
Modernising Authorisations was announced in last year’s spring budget and will come into force on September 30 2024 to improve the flow of trade and cut costs for businesses.
It will see the existing 42 standalone customs authorisations grouped into five categories, meaning traders who already have the green light in one area will only need to provide supplementary information to gain authorisation for others in that group.
The government claims the move will improve HMRC’s offer to traders and “radically reduce” the number of customs authorisations.
Jamie Harper, Customs Broker at Independent Freight Solutions, said the move will speed things up by reducing the amount of time traders spend on applications across a range of industries.
He said: “Modernising Authorisations is a welcome change as it should reduce the number of times traders need to input fresh information and ease the burden of having multiple authorisations where criteria overlap.
“Broader categories for areas such as transit, ports and wharves and declarations and simplifications will be introduced to cover a range of needs, and existing authorisation holders won’t need to do anything for the time being.
“It will be all on one digital platform making it easier for traders to apply, with no need to start new applications where authorisation has already been granted.
“That being said, we would recommend traders take a look at what is being introduced to make the most of them, and we are always on hand to talk through the changes in the buildup to September.”
