New UK & EU Restrictions on Russian Origin Iron and Steel

Steel manufacturing plant

Dear Valued Customers,

We’d like to share with you recent updates to the sanctions placed on Russian goods by both the UK and the EU, due to take effect from the 30th September.  These updates target iron and steel products of commodity codes starting 72 or 73 which have been processed in a 3rd country but incorporate iron and steel of Russian origin.

This means that importers of iron and steel products will need to declare at import whether their goods contain Russian origin metals.

The UK Government has stated that traders should be prepared to have documentation available to evidence any declarations, as goods may be stopped at the border for checks. This evidence can take the form of Mill Test Certificates (MTC) but other documents may be accepted.

The EU is also bringing these sanctions into force at the same time meaning that if you export goods of Iron and Steel then you may be asked by your customer for additional evidence. An MTC is also stated as preferred evidence in the EU, however each country will have different lists of other documents that can be used.

Further information on these measures, as well as a full list of the commodity codes affected is available in the Government’s Guidance.

However if you have any queries then please contact a member of our team.
